Q: amoxicillin?
i've heard that if you take amoxicillin and you aren't sick and you don't have an infection for it to fight, it can really make you sick. is this true?
A: No, it is not true.
If you have a serious allergic reaction to a particular antibiotic, then that would be a different story.
Antibiotics ARE over-prescribed and make it easier for the bacteria to become resistant to antibiotic therapy when people take them when they aren't called for.
Many times people take them when they have a viral infection...which antibiotics do not work against.
Any antibiotic or medication may have side effects though- tummy distress, sensitivity to sunlight, etc. depending upon a variety of things. Any pharmacist can advise you on how to take the medication, and what to expect or not expect.
Some antibiotics (including Amoxicillin) are given as a preventative measure a few days before dental surgery, and one wouldn't expect to become "really sick" (as you say) in this instance.
Q: Amoxicillin?
My doctor put me on Amoxicillin for a toe infection I've had this medicine before. Last night I started getting huge cold sores on my bottom lip and now today I have five more for a total of 11. Does anyone know if this could be a side effect of this medicine? Should I contact my doctor?
A: Antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your body as well as the bad. This may be a side effect, defiantly ask your doc.
You can eat yogurt , which has live cultures, or take acidophilus pills to add back the good bacteria.
Q: What kind of effects does Amoxicillin have when treating bacterial infections?
Its more like what kind of therapeutic effects does Amoxicillin have? i've been finding it on the internet, but all i got it how it works to kill the bacteria or the side effect..i need some information.
A: What kinds of "therapeutic effects" are you expecting?
Amoxil is an antibiotic. Not a compound with many uses, antibiotic effects being but one. Amoxil is an antibiotic, period. It kills certain spectra of bacteria.
The therapy is that you hopefully won't have so many harmful bacteria running around your system anymore and your immune system can take care of the remainder.
Do be mindful of the side effects, however. Also realize that using antibiotics can be harmful if used too often when not necessary. Your immune system comes to depend on them and you develop resistant strains.
Q: What kind of effect does Amoxicillin have on birth conrtol?
I am on ortho tri cyclen lo and recently had to take amoxicillin. I had sex a few times while on both medications. I know that a back up method is suggested, so I used the withdrawal method (i know not quite as good as condoms). Do you think I will be ok and not pregnant?
A: Uh, is that really a chance you're willing to take? For goodness sakes, if you can't wait until you're off the antibiotics, then use a condom. It's not forever!
Q: How long after being on a cycle of Amoxicillin is seasonique back to being fully effective?
I have just completed a cycle of Amoxicillin. I am also currently on Seasonique. How long after finishing my cycle of the amoxicillin will my birth control be working to its fullest extent, so i can once again have unprotected sex.
A: I've heard that any type of medication that isn't a simple pain reliever like advil or tylenol affects your birth control. I even asked my doctor about it and to be safe she suggested about 3/4 weeks. I would be so paranoid that I would probably wait the full month.
Q: How long does it usually take for amoxicillin to kick in?
I have strep throat and started taking amoxicillin for it yesterday. I am wondering when I will start to feel better. Thanks!
A: I Think you Would Feel Better In At Least 24 Hrs., Amoxicillin is a Beta-Lactam, I Would Expect Almost Immediate Killing (Bacteriocidal) of Bacteria.
Q: What do amoxicillin pills do for you after getting your wisdom teeth removed?
So I was given amoxicillin pills to take 3 times a day until they run out after getting my wisdom teeth removed. I know they're antibiotics, but what are they supposed to be preventing/treating? What sort of infection? Dry socket which I hear is a deep bone infection or just a general infection of the gum?
A: Besides preventing an infection from starting at the site of your tooth extraction, it's to keep the nasty bacteria in your mouth from traveling to your heart and other organs and starting up a new infection there. People with heart conditions are ALWAYS put on antibiotics--sometimes even prior to--major, invasive dental work.
Q: What's the difference between flucloxacillin and amoxicillin?
What's the difference between flucloxacillin and amoxicillin in terms of treatment? What are these drugs used for? Which one is better to use?
A: Flucloxacillin is often used for the treatment of serious infections due to sensitive staphylococci. The pharmacokinetic (PK)-pharmacodynamic (PD) breakpoint of flucloxacillin has not been determined by the use of population PK. Targets based on the duration of non-protein-bound concentrations above the MIC (fT>MIC) best correlate with clinical cure rates for beta-lactams

Q: How dangerous is it if cats get into amoxicillin?
A friend's cat chewed half a tablet of amoxicillin then threw up. How bad is this for the kitty?
A: Amoxicillin is regularly given to cats with infections. I would call the vet, though, and provide the dosage info just in case it's a toxic dose. But, he should be fine, especially if he vomited.
Q: How long will amoxicillin take to work on toothache?
Hi , Last night i had a really bad toothache (which is still goin on now) i went to the dentists and they gave me a perscription for Amoxicillin after telling me that my gum is inflamed.
What i want to know is how long it will take to start working/get better.
A: Ok..to begin with the antibiotic you were given is not a pain reliever. It's job is to deal with infection..If however you have say a abscess that is causing a tooth to hurt the antibiotic can reduce the infection thereby reducing the pain..However, if you have an abscess it will need to be dealt with . The chances the infection will come back is about 90%...and will be more painful the second time around....Keep in mind that abscess infections erode bone so get it taken care of. The antibiotic will have done it's job in two weeks.

Q: How long does nausea caused by the antibiotic amoxicillin usually lasts?
Just started taking amoxicillin for an ear infection and starting to feel a bit nauseous, but not enough to throw up yet or decide to go back to the doctor. Would it go away after my body gets used to it? Eating saltines and also yogurt right now, but worried going to work is going to be a nightmare if this lasts the whole week I need to take the pills.
A: Taking it with or right after meals may help reduce the nausea, but expect it to be a problem for at least the first half of your course of the antibiotic. Duration from each pill can be anywhere from a few hours after you take it to all the time the whole time you're on it.
So, food will likely help- even if it's a big glass of milk, bread, eggs, crackers.... but do it with a bigger meal if you can, and your stomach will thank you.
Yes, sometimes your body gets used to it in a day or two, and then you can take it on an empty stomach, no problem. But the yogurt and saltines are probably not enough. If it remains a problem with work, you can also try dramamine or chewing minty gum to help alleviate the nausea. (If the Dramamine doesn't konk you out!)
Good luck, and stay with them for the week, even if the nausea stays. If you go off early, you run the rick of creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria! Then you're kind of screwed because they have to put you on something more serious like Cipro that will make you even more nauseated! (Cipro SUCKS!)
Q: How long does Amoxicillin last in your body after taking it?
Let's say you have just taken 7 days of 875mg BID of Amoxicillin (full course as perscribed), how long would it take to completely be out of the body. Say, days later You were exposed to the same bacteria; would you be protected or out of luck? Is there a window of saftey just incase you forgot to switch your toothbrush or something else that could breed a secondary infection?
A: What you are asking about is the half life of a medication.
For Amoxicillin the elimination half-life ranges from 0.7 to 1.4 hours in patients with normal renal function and metabolism. It quickly leaves the body.
But, if you are trying to figure out how long it takes for a pill to be completely eliminated from your system you must also consider the absorption rate.
Amoxicillin is rapidly absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract. So, it is fully in your body usually within 1 to 2 hours after taking the pill.
Then it takes an additional .7 to 1.4 hours to be eliminated from the body.
Just add up the numbers and it takes 1.7 to 3.4 hours to be completely out of the body from the moment you swallow the pill.
You can always get re-infected with a bacteria again - there are many types and many strains that require different antibiotic therapy to kill them. Antibiotics do not help your body build antibodies against invaders. They just kill the bacteria while you are taking it - even the good bacteria. If you were re-exposed, then there is a chance you could be re-infected.
Q: How to keep my stomach from getting upset from amoxicillin?
I got a staph infection from a spider bite and my doctor put me on 875 mg of amoxicillin 2 times a day and I take it with food but, I have to fight to not throw up. What can I do to not feel sick to my stomach when I take my meds? Thanks.
I did eat before taking the pill, I ate some lunch then about 15 mins later took it.
A: I used to take that when I had a sinus infection and it gave me the same problems. My doctor said to avoid any dairy products especially ice cream, milk, and cheese. It helps quite a bit for diarrhea and a rolling stomach but it might also work for nausea
Q: What is the difference between amoxicillin and azithromycin?
I caught strep throat about 2 weeks ago, and I was prescribed amoxicillin. I went back for a checkup on Wednesday because even though I was done with my medication, I still felt sick. I had some blood drawn and the clinic called and said I had gotten strep again. The new prescription I got is azithromycin. What is the difference between these two medications?
A: You probably never got over the first bout of strep and the amoxicillian is a derivative of penicillin, zithromycin is a different antibiotic, some people have had the penicillin too many times and it doesn't work anymore. zithromycin is one that is taken for 1 time and stays in the system until 5 days on its own.
Q: How much lower does birth control effectively work while taking Amoxicillin?
I am taking amoxicillin for asthmatic bronchitis on the package, it says, "Some antibiotics may reduce the effectiveness of birth control" How accurate is this?
He didn't pre*** or anything. We're just scared. How long would it be before I'd know if I were prenant?
A: Very accurate. If you call a pharmacy, they could give you the accurate statistics.
Many hormonal birth controls do not work at all when combined with Amoxicillin. (2 of my friends kids were concieved this way! :p )
Definatly use condoms or consider abstaining while you're on the anti-biotic. Don't take the chance that it might slightly work ya know? Make sure you're fully protected.
Whoa!! The shot does NOT fully protect you. If you take antibiotics or barbituates, it lowers the effectivness. You are on the SAME hormonal birth control, only in a shot form. It's basically the same contents..... Don't be dumb! (haha, I have a nephew because of this funny little fact about the shot lol... his mommy didn't know either .... )
