Q: macrobid??
I was prescribed macrobid 100 mg twice a day for only three days. I am in nursing school and i looked up the normal dosage because the three days struck me as odd and it was normally a seven days prescrition. I have recurrent kidney infections but i didn't have any symptoms this time. Now i am on my last dose of medicine and i have back(kidney) pain that has developed and has gotten worse after the start of this antibotic. Your urine is suppose to become rust colored with macrobid but my hasen't and it always did with cipro and microdantin in the pass. I know I need to get more antibiotics but what do you (with medical or personal experience) make of the symptoms developing and becoming worse after the start of the med and is it normal for your urine to remain normal.

A: Recurrent Infection?I would ask to be switched to another anti-microbial such as Bactrim or Zithromax because I don't think the Macrobid is killing the bug.

Q: How long after starting Macrobid should I feel relief from a Urinary Tract Infection?
I went to my doctor on Tuesday (Today is Thursday) and was prescribed Macrobid 1 Pill Twice a Day. I have taken 4 doses and still have awful burning and frequent urges. How long does it usually take before the antibiotic kicks in to give some relief?

A: It can usually take at least 3-5 days for you to feel relief. However, if the pain worsens or symptoms don't clear by ten, then you need to call your doctor again, cause you may have a secondary infection.

Q: What happens if I accidentally took an expired dose of macrobid?
Macrobid is a antibiotic used to treat UTI's. It expired in January of 2007. Did it just lose potency, or does anyone know if the chemical makeup of the medicine changes so as to be harmful?

A: For sure there won't be any guarantee that its strength and potency remain the same. So far, nothing has been mentioned that its chemical make up becomes dangerous past its expiry date. (I know of Aspirin and Tetracyline of getting dangerous past their expiry dates.)

Q: Has anybody had a terrible reaction from taking Macrobid for a Urinary tract infection while pregnant?
Did anybody experience terrible vomiting? Did the doctor prescribe something else that is safe? My Doctor says that my pregnancy is so early on 7 weeks, that Macrobid is the only things thats safe, but I'm having bad reaction to this.

A: i took that when i wasnt pregnant. you know you are just at the point for morning sickness to kick in, and the macrobid and vomitting may be related, but it seems more coincidental to me. i didn't have a bad reaction to it. and its in the class of antibiotics that are safe to take while pregnant/breastfeeding. i took it when i had a bladder infection, because we were trying and i wasnt for sure if i was pregnant or not. it seems not to be as strong as the other antibitics, such as bactrim. so if this doesnt kick your bladder infection, then you may need to do another round. definetely call your dr and let them know that you arent able to keep anything down, and you think its because of the meds. good luck!!!!

Q: UTI, macrobid did not work, dr wants to wait 4 days before prescribing a different drug?
I have a uti, DR.prescribed Macrobid. It did not work. Now Dr. wants to wait 4 days for a urine culture to come back before he prescribes a different antibiotic. Will I get a kidney infection in the interim? I just found out Im pregenant. Will this affect the fetus?

A: Yikes! 4 days is a long time. I speak from experience...being in the second week of my own uti h*ll. I too had macrobid which did not work, then got cipro. BUT! I'm allergic to cipro and got a horrid rash and scary other things. ALSO--as it turned out, my bacteria was not susceptible to cipro, so the whole thing was a waste. A culture takes 48 hours. Insist that your doctor have an answer and antibiotic for you in that time. ALSO-- gif you had a "quick stick" test...get your results. The amount of blood in mine doubled over two days, as did the white count which alerted my doc to take the infection seriously. Goood luck and feel better soon. I am taking amoxycilin and Doxycycline. I think I'm getting better, but doc warned that fever rises and falls as meds take effect.

Q: Does anyone know if there is interference between Macrobid and the Birth Control Pill?
I am starting Macrobid today to clear up a bladder infection. I only have 1 day left of my birth control pack. I wait a week then start a new package. I am wondering if their will be any intereference? Thanks! The pharmacist said something about it being an anti-septic and not working the same as an antibiotic. Therefore, she said its not like penicillen, its just there to clear the bacteria. Maybe I misunderstood her though?

A: Yes, most antibiotics interfere with birth control pills. They activate enzymes that metabolize the hormones in birth control pills. Essentially, the hormones are broken down so fast that they don't work on you. Whether or not it will inactivate the first pills of your next pack depends on how long you will be taking the macrobid. By no means do you want to stop taking the macrobid early, you need to finish all those pills. But you should consider using back up birth control (such as condoms) until you are finished with the macrobid. Hope this helps!

Q: How many of you have been on Macrobid while pregnant?

Q: Can Macrobid be used to treat a sinus infection?
I know this antibiotic is prescribed mainly for UTI's, but is it effective in treating a sinus infection?

A: Macrobid is prescribed mainly for UTIs. I suffer from chronic sinus infections and am prescribed, Augmentin, Bactrim or Levaquin for a course of 2-6 weeks depending upon the severity of the infection. My school nurse said Macrobid will not clear a sinus infection.

Q: Can anyone give me reassurance about taking Macrobid while being pregnant?
I am about 23 weeks pregnant and ended up in the hospital with a UTI.They gave me Macrobid, since I wasn't sure about the drug I looked it up on the computer and found some people who scared me out of taking it. I may be worrying too much but just the doctor saying it is fine doesn't seem enough for me. Can anyone please tell me their experience with Macrobid!!!

A: i'm 27 weeks and i've been on that medication twice during this pregnancy. It made me so sick that I couldn't leave my bed for the entire time i was taking it, and i dehydrated twice. MY doctors prescribed me ampicillin instead and it was loads better. Taking the macrobid didn't harm my baby, but i wouldn't recommend it.

Q: Is it OK to take Macrobid in last 4 weeks of pregnancy?
I am 9 months pregnant and was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. My OBGYN prescribed Nitrofurantoin which is also known as Macrobid. When picking up the prescription on the warning it clearly states "DO NOT use use this medication when near the end of pregnancy (38-42 weeks) or at the time of labor and delivery. Doing so may cause a certain blood disorder called hemolytic anemia in your baby." I called my Doctor and she said it's fine, everyone takes it while pregnant. I called the pharmacist and he said "DO NOT TAKE". How can two healthcare professionals be so contradictary when the issue is so important?

A: Listen to the pharmacist. It has been my experience that they are more well versed on medication that the docotrs. I have even had doctors perscribe medication I am allergic to. Sometimes the benifits out weight the risks, but not in this case. Go see another doctor, or go to the er (and don;t feel stupid) the4re is medicine that you can take while pregnant. I don't remember what it is called, just that it is much more expensive than what you would usually get. Please get a second opinion, and get the proper meds. Good luck to you.

Q: What is the most effective drug to treat UTI infections? i used Bactrim & Macrobid and i still have the UTI ?
what would be something the doctor could give me fro my urinary tract infection? thanks.

A: I had UTI's almost every day for a long while. I went to a urologist and they put me on preceription meds which did not help one bit! Regular old cranberry pills helped me a ton, I would take 6-10. Juice did not help at all really. Avoid alcohol and sugars. Vitamin C also helps, and I would boil parsley in water and strain it for a tea. Doesn't taste great but that helped. Sometimes hot baths worked, sometimes it made it worse. Long hot showers helped for a little bit, also Advil because my urethra would get inflamed and hurt worse! But I never found anything better than regular old cranberry pills and a stress free lifestyle. If the UTI consists for a while, or you are peeing red-ish or pink (blood) you should go to a doctor to get some special meds that make your pee orange. If it still is bothering you, you may need to have an ultra sound because it might just be your bladder is not emptying all the way. They usually pass up as long as you avoid soda, and drink plenty of water!

Q: I have a UTI and I know that macrobid is safe during pregnancy but what about ?
phenazopyridine hydrochloride 95 Mg? I have a UTI and my period is late, its possible that I am pregnant, if I am, I am not that far along, Im trying to wait until the 21st to find out if I am pregnant by going to my Obgyn...Has anyone used the pain reliver phenazopyridine hydrochloride 95 (Uristat) while pregnant? Jambalya seriously if you think its gross why be in the pregnancy section.

A: Jambalya sorry to tell you but you were once a PARASITE in someone's uterus. Furthermore, don't come into this section if this stuff grosses you out. DUH. You are talking about Pyridium - it is pregnancy category B. Pregnancy Category B: Reproduction studies have been performed in rats at doses up to 50 mg/kg/day and have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride. There are however, no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. You should contact your doctor - but pregnancy cat. B is generally safe.
