If you had a urine culture and the organism was identified as E. coli, Kelbsiella or Enterocobacter, then either one will work. Find out what is causing the infection.
Q: 100mg of Nitrofurantoin prescribed to be taken before sex for prevention?
I have experienced multiple urinary tract infections following intercourse. My doctor prescribed nitrofurantoin to me and advised that I take it before intercourse or immediately following to aid in preventing a UTI. Is this safe? When doing research online, I'm reading a lot about "finishing all of the medication" which leads me to believe that taking just one dose of it may possibly create a resistance to this antibiotic. . .
A: some docs advocate that or bactrim. Macrodantin can turn urine brown color... finishing all the med is if you have a full blown uti. he should have done a urine culture to be sure... if not, go to gyn doc.

A: There are lots of drugs labeled as being unsafe during pregnancy, but sometimes they are necessary to take and the risks are very small. Macrobid is very safe and is prescribed to pregnant women ALL the time.
Surely your doctor knew you were pregnant when he prescribed these pills to you? Trust your doctor. They aren't going to deliberately prescribe medications that are dangerous. The risks of leaving the UTI untreated are far more dangerous to your rbaby than taking this drug.
Q: My 6 year old son is on Nitrofurantoin for an upper UTI, is it normal for this medication to give him mouth?
ulcers, he has about 4 or 5 on his lower lip and one in his upper mouth and they are really sore. should he stop the medication or carry on with it? is this a normal reaction?

A: Nitrofurantoin has excellent coverage against the primary organisms commonly found in UTIs. However, nitrofurantoin is not effective against Chlamydia. Doxycycline 100 mg taken twice daily for 7 days can be an effective treatment for chlamydia.
The following are some areas of concern for patients taking a tetracycline antibiotics:
1) Take medication on an empty stomach.
2) Take medication with a large glass of water (8 oz)
3) This drug may cause photosensitivity in which your skin may extremely sensitive to the sun. Therefore avoid the sun, wear hat, and use sunscreen.
4) This medication may cause esophageal ulcerations so avoid taking the medication at bedtime.
5) If you are currently taking oral contraceptives, the antibiotic may decrease the effectiveness of the birth control. Therefore, use a backup method (such as condoms) to prevent pregnancy.
6) Take the antibiotic 4 hours before or 2 hours after taking antacids, iron or zinc supplements, multivitamins, or dairy products. These elements will decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotic.
7) In addition, many patients with chlamydia are often co-infected with gonorrhea. Check with health care provider if a culture needs to be done.
