Q: Olanzapine?
Does olanzapine cause permanent brain changes
A: Not as far as we know. Olanzapine (Zyprexa) is a newer generation of antipsychotics, and affects brain neurochemistry, but hopefully does not cause permanent brain changes.
Q: Olanzapine has knackered my sleep up on withdrawing from it. How long till sleep gets back to normal?
Whenever I don't take olanzapine for a day or two I am up all night and sometimes all the next day and don't feel tired. I am wanting to withdraw from it completely so when will this effect wear off till I can sleep normally again?
PS No lectures about only doing this on the advice of your doctor etc. Thanks
A: Hi there
my finacee was put onto that pill, he came off it over a year ago, his sleeping routine is still not back to normal.
he finds it hard to doze off to sleep, can i give you some advice, withdraw slowly from the tablets as if you don;t it makes matters worse. my fiancee just stopped taking them. we were told if he started steeping down on the pills it would of been easier than just cutting off them,
it can be tricky to get back into a sleep pattern it will happen it will take time for your sleep ti return to normal.
Q: How long does it take & how effective does it take for Olanzapine stop auditry hallucinations (hearing voices)?
I have just started take olanzapine in addition to lithium & lamotrigne for my bipolar. How long should it take for is to start to work and when it does how effective is it? Cheers guys.
A: If you live in US you call TAPS for help ,they help . go to their website and study article about white noise, electro magnetism. and others.in my view someone is playing you. taking treatment will also help you. bye.
Q: Why is my Olanzapine dose being reduced when I am feeling more depressed?
My depression is worsening yet my dose of Olanzapine is being reduced. I have severe depression, not schizophrenia.
A: This is something that you must discuss with your doctor or psychiatrist. Olanzapine is an anti psychotic as you probably know and it is fairly unusual to prescribe it for depression. Your doctor may want to reduce the dose to see how you function on less because a large dose can make you very sleepy and lethargic both of which can be symptoms of depression. Make an appointment to see your doctor to discuss the issues.
I am sorry that your depression is worsening, personally I would recommend trying not to take anti psychotics for depression. I have had to take olanzapine and risperidone and felt really miserable on both
Q: How long does insomnia last when stopping olanzapine?
I have stopped taking this medication and have not sleeped for a week and cannot see any end yet
A: it sounds like with the not sleeping and the withdrawal symptoms posted in an earlier question, you have stopped these cold turkey.
what dosage where you on to start with, did you gradually decrease them?
i really think you need to see your GP or care person and get this sorted as leaving it will only hinder your recovery.
Q: Transdermal nicotines effect on metabolism of caffeine, olanzapine and diazepam?
I have just switched from smoking 15-20 cigarettes a day to wearing a medium strength nicotine patch with low strength nicotine gum.
I am interested to know how this will effect the levels of olanzapine in my blood. Will they rise or fall? Also will this cause caffeine (low use)and diazepam(low use) to effect me more or less?
MUCH appreciated!
A: Metabolism is essentially the speed at which our body's motor is
running. The speed at which our body burns calories is called the metabolic
rate. It's how fast your "motor" is running when you're still in a
reclined position or sleeping. About 60-75% of energy is expended by the
body at rest in such activities.
The metabolism is based on the number of calories we burn throughout
the day. Our body constantly burns calories to keep us going whether we
are eating, sleeping, cleaning etc. People with a lower percentage of
body fat (i.e. muscular) have a higher metabolism than others that are
less muscular because muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than
fat. Some people have a slower metabolic rate and have a harder time
staying slim. Younger persons have higher (faster) metabolism because of
the increased activity of cells. A slow metabolism actually causes to
store fat. The slower the metabolic rate, the greater the weight gains.
How to build muscles to improve metabolism? What type of exercise is
ideal that speed up metabolism so that you burn calories even at rest or
sleep? There are simple exercises that speed up the metabolism.
Causes for Low Metabolism
* Fasting
* A low calorie diet
* Snacking throughout the day on high sugared foods (candy, colas,
cakes, gum).
* Eating or drinking too much sugar containing foods.
* Lack of physical activity.
* Underactive thyroid.
Metabolism Boosters
There are some natural metabolism boosters (natural foods) that
improves your metabolism. Do not take over the counter pills containing animal
thyroid extract that claim to boost up metabolism. These products may
have side effects as diarrhea, increased heart rate, excessive
sweating, nervousness, tremors, bulging eyes, etc.
How to Improve (Speed up) Metabolism
* Do not skip any meals
* Exercise daily
* Build your muscles
* Avoid alcohol, sugar, and fastings
*Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.
*Eat foods with high nutrition values
Q: If olanzapine is not addictive, how does it improve mood?
Been on olanzapine for 5 months now and wondering if it actually does anything for me.
A: Get in touch with the doctor who prescribed it for you. That doctor would be the one who is able to tell you just exactly how it affects your mood. The way a mood stabilizer works is different from one person to another.
Q: Have you ever taken Olanzapine (or a similar med) and what was your personal experience with it?
[Or any other neuroleptic drug such as Zyprexa, or even Respiridol]
Did it effect your physical appearance (eg, skin), if so, in what ways?
Thanks.
A: no but i worked in a home for the mental health and some were on it, they didnt have any side affects but knowing that there is, i think it make syou very drowsy and also very distant but hey if your unsure use the web xx
Q: Can i take Zyprexa[bipolar medicine olanzapine] with 81 mg Asprin the asprin if for my pregnancy because?
i have antiphospolipid syndrome and its ok to take low dose asprin. so can i take zyprexa with 81mg asprin?
A: This is probably a question you should ask your pharmacist or doctor! I work in a department which is a part of a pharmacy but we are not allowed to make recommendations because we don't know your medical history and that sort of thing and the pharmacy/doctor does...
Q: Are there any withdrawal side effects from coming off antipychotics like olanzapine?
What are your experiences?
A: That is zyprexa, isn't it? I take 15 mg once a night for about 6 years now but never tried to not take it without doctors advice. The few times I forgot to take it I could not sleep. So my answer is you will not be able to sleep. But then I realized my mistake and called out sick to work and took my medication. I changed my name, I was Tchaikovsky, and several others but you know me because I answered your question about feeling guilty about being off work and have it in the watchlist.
Q: Can anyone tell me what Lyrinel and Olanzapine is for?
I had to call a doctor for a member of my family,
as he had been lying on my couch for over a week, playing with his laptop, and in his usual bad mood bad mood.
The doctor thought my room was rather smelly,
and gave me a prescription to take to the drugstore, not sure what this prescription is for, can anyone help.
A: Are you his mother? Does he spend a lot of time with his laptop in an obsessive manner? Is he a regular user of Y/A and spend a lot of time on one particular site?
Maybe the medicine has something to do with this type of obsessive behavior.
Q: Do you think 19 olanzapine and 21 celexa could kill someone?
if not kill you, what will it do to you?
A: If you, or someone you know, took the above drug cocktail, you need to head to the ER.
Drug overdoses vary from person to person. It may result in a miserable night of vomiting, but could also result in loss of life. If you, or someone you know, has overdosed, get to an emergency room asap.
For what its worth:
Celexa overdose symptoms include:
Dizziness
Sweating
Nausea and vomiting
Shakiness (tremor)
Drowsiness
Fast heartbeat (tachycardia).
Other Celexa overdose symptoms may include, but are not limited to:
Amnesia (memory loss)
Confusion
Seizures
Trouble breathing
Blue skin
Muscle pain
Irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
Coma
Loss of life.
In studies, very high doses of Celexa (up to 2000 mg) did not cause loss of life. However, loss of life is more likely to occur if the drug is taken with other medications or alcohol.
For olanzapine:
Symptoms of an overdose include tachycardia, agitation, dysarthria, decreased consciousness and coma. Death has been reported after an acute overdose of 450 mg, but also survival after an acute overdose of 1500 mg.[30] There is no specific, known antidote for olanzapine overdose, and even physicians are recommended to call a certified poison control center for information on the treatment of such a case.
Q: How long does the insomnia last when withdrawing from Zyprexa,Olanzapine?
A: As with any drug you may get side effects, these can occur when coming off the drug too.
Its a pain in the bum, but its a "how long is a piece of string question", but I would say at most a week(ish) would not be unexpected.
However it may be the original problem you were medicated for that is casuing the problem, so it may well be worth continuing the treatment if it was your own choice to come off them.
Have a word with a doctor or pharmacist, they can both give you advice on side effects of starting and coming off a drug and are equally qualified to do so.
Q: Has anyone been prescribed olanzapine and how did it make you feel?
I have it because my shrink said im hyper.manic depresion highs and lows..more highs, scared to take it!
A: Try this link to the Mind website:
Making sense of anti psychotics:
http://www.mind.org.uk/Information/Booklets/Making+sense/antip.htm
It will give you easy to read and understand information about the type of medication that you have been given.
I have clients who take this medication and they feel it is really helpful for them. Remember that everyone reacts to medication in different ways, so what some people will experience as side effects, others will not.
The best thing to do is give it a go and give it time to work and then see how you find it helps you. If you do have problems then go back to your GP and discuss them with him/her, there may be alternatives that would be better suited to you.
I've also included this link:
Understanding Bi Polar Disorder:
http://www.mind.org.uk/Information/Booklets/Understanding/Understanding+manic+depression.htm
as this may provide you with more information about the type of illness that you are being treated for and help you to see that getting the right kind of treatment will be a good thing.
I would also suggest that you see if there is a mental health charity in your area:
http://www.mind.org.uk/Mind+in+your+area/
they are easy to access and you don't need to be referred by anyone else, you can do it yourself.
They are used to dealing with people who suffer from mental distress and illness on a daily basis and they are very patient and understanding.
They offer a wide range of services and you will be able to find support and things to help you. They won't judge you or force you to do anything that you don't want to, but it is another way of getting support to help you with your treatment and diagnosis.
Hope this helps.
Take care and good luck.
