Q: Risperidone?
I'm 15 years old and have been depressed for a long time now. I've only told people in the last three months and since then I've seen a few doctors. There were recently two incidents which I ended up in hospital afterwards. The first was when I went out with my friends and got so drunk I got alcohol poisoning. I used to drink to give myself confidence and then stayed sober for months, so my tolerance for alcohol went down. I haven't drank since and won't, it's not an addicted thing. The second was when I took an overdose of 7 paracetamol, 8 co-codamol and 15 aspirin before school. When I got to school I couldn't breathe or keep my eyes open properly and was pale and shaky. On both occasions, I saw a psychiatrist on the ward who reviewed me and then discharged me. I saw her again today and she has put me on medication starting straight away. I am on Risperidone and also something else which will calm me down and help me sleep, also stop me being so implusive but I can't remember the name. I thought it was strange how she put me on medication when she hadn't tried anything else first. I thought usually they were extremely cautious when giving anti-depressants to children so this confused me a little. What are the side effects I might find on the medication, or difficulties?

A: I was only given this medication when I was psychotic and in hospital,it seems a heavy medication for depression, but i dont know much about this drug,Go back and discuss with your doctor, ask why you have been given this particular medication.

Q: What are my legal rights to depot risperidone injections?
My community mental health clinic want me to have depot risperidone injections fortnightly because of non compliance with oral medication. However I have told them that I realised I made a mistake by stopping my medication and want to go back to taking it orally like I used to. They have mentioned possibly getting a CTO against me. What are my rights? Do I have any at all? I was the one that was honest with them by telling them I had stopped the medication and wanted to restart it again.

A: NAMI is a non-profit that provides support for mental health and protects the rights of those with mental illness. They have a legal link for legal guidance on this website: http://www.nami.org/template.cfm?section=Find_Support

Q: Does risperidone interfere with the effects of the pill?
I'm currently taking risperidone for Tourettes, but I also take the pill (microgyon). I asked my doctor whether taking risperidone would cancel out the effects of the pil, and he didn't know. Does anybody here know?

A: no

Q: Does 2mg of risperidone for bpd make it so I can barely move?
I am taking 100mg of lamictal and 2mg of risperidone for bipolar disorder right now, and I can barely move my body. I'm stuck in my bed right now with all of my muscles tight and I feel like I can't move.

A: what you're experiencing is called dystonia and is a not so fun side effect that can come with risperdal. it's usually not this extreme, however, and you really should call your doctor immediately if you can barely move. i've gotten dystonia in my jaw before from risperidal so my doctor told me to take some generic benadryl to offset that side effect. it's still worth a call to your doctor, but that's what helped me in the past.

Q: Side effect of risperidone continueing after stoping 4 weeks ago?
I Stopped taking risperidone due to lactation. As a result of this my pro lactin levels were high. However after stopping this medication 4 weeks ago, I am still having this problem. Is this normal or do I need to go back to my gp. Also they've changed the risperidone for aripiprazole.

A: Prolactin levels increase due to the blocking of dopamine receptors. I don't know of any antipsychotic drugs or atypical anti-psychotic drugs that don't block dopamine, including Abilify (aripiprazole). Just because the clinical drug trials did not show higher prolactin levels using abiilfy compared to placebo does not mean it does not occur. The FDA allows doctors to report side effects observed after the clinical drug trials, but that data is kept secret from the public. The FDA sat on the phen-fen data for years until a group of doctors at the Mayo Clinic got tired of waiting and made their own press conference. Its all about money. These atypical antipsycotics promote weight gain and diabetes and are overprescribed. Often the doctor who prescribe them get paid by the drug companies to do the clinical drug trials. If they reported too many side effects that would hurt sales they would not be on the payroll. http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2009/021436s027lbl.pdf

Q: What is the natural, nutritional way or method to dispel all effects of the drug Risperdal (risperidone)?
For some reasons, I have to dispel all effects of the drug named Rispedal (risperidone) administered to me. This drug reduces the dopamine level of my brain by blocking something in the brain. May anyone tell and explain to me some natural, nutritional ways to dispel the drugs? For example, what should I consume to improve my immune system, remove the drugs from my body, or at least reduce the effects and side effects of this drug? Any good suggestions are welcome. :-)

A: Since nobody has answered yet, I'll toss in my 2 cents. The only way to get it out of your body is to stop taking it and let your body process it out. No cleansers have been shown to be effective for removing drugs from your system, no matter what the headshops claim... some of them can alter the results of a drug test so that you have to take the test again later (which looks rather suspicious), but that's the closest you can get. Now, as far boosting your immune system, there are several options for that when it comes to recovering from the impact of the drug. First and foremost, make sure you are eating a proper diet, getting enough sleep, and doing at least some form of exercise (even if it's walking around) at least a few times a week. That's the basic way to stay healthy in general, but if you find that you are getting sick more often than you would like, there are some natural options to help boost your immune system. Some of the most popular natural products for boosting the immune system are Colostrum, Mushrooms (Maitake, Shiitake, and Reishi), IP-6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate), Beta Glucans, Elderberry, Echinacea (should be taken short-term only), and any antioxidants.

Q: Will I be ok if I lower my Risperidone medicine?
I am suffering from all the terrible side effects of taking Risperidone for Bipolar I. The weight gain around the stomach, the tiredness and fatigue, the mild depression and sadness, the uncontrollable laughter and other symptoms and I am wondering if I stay on Epilim but lower the Risperidone to 1 mg a day instead of 2mg (what i take now) and avoid energy drinks and coffee - will I stay sane or get sick?

A: Only your doctor can alter you dose. 2mg is the initial adult dose for risperidone, so that's the lowest dose that one can give to an adult. Talk to your doctor on how to manage those unwanted side effects.

Q: How long does risperidone depot stay in your system?
I have been off the depot for 2 months now however i still feel the side effects such as headaches and fatigue. I also can't drink alcohol as it still feels like it mixes with the medication.

A: Effective levels of Risperidone depot will stay in the blood for 1 month. The side effects are insomnia, agitation , anxiety, fatigue, lack of concentration , nausea and vomiting ,headache etc. Alcohol does not go with this drug

Q: How long does risperidone take to take effect?
I was recently put on this medication and I'm wondering how long it will take to begin working.

A: It's a case to case basis. For instance, in schizophrenia it's efficacy was established in four short-term (4-8 week) controlled trials of psychotic inpatients. For, bipolar, an average of 3 weeks. For aggressive autism, patient treated with risperidone claimed to have significant improvement after 2-3 days. So, it really varies. Best to ask your attending physician so you'd know what to expect.

Q: How has risperidone helped with your marijuana induced psychosis?
I have psychosis for about three weeks now and I barely started to take 1mg of risperidol and I wanted to hear any stories about taking it for marijuana induced psychosis. The psychosis was started by me smoking marijuana.

A: wtf? marijuana doesnt make u physco?

Q: What happens when you come off Risperidone and Depakote?
I'm on 1000mg Depakote and 2mg Risperidone.

A: Depakote® (divalproex sodium) is a prescription medication used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It is also used to prevent migraines. As with most medications for seizures, stopping Depakote is not recommended without your healthcare provider's approval. Stopping Depakote quickly is also not recommended. Although Depakote is not addicting and is not likely to be abused, stopping it too quickly can cause seizures to worsen.

Q: How much risperidone would it take to kill someone?
I use the drug for minor delusions. I was hoping I could use it to kill myself. Sometimes I feel amazing and sometimes not, thats just how life is for me. Right now I'm really not all that sad, I just think it would be best if I were dead. I don't like life, its boring and difficult.

A: dude nobody likes you just go die. Take all that you got. You deserve it big boy. Just stick ur finger in your butt, and wait to die :D

Q: What's the right amount of Risperidone and Effexor XR you should take to treat bipolar disorder?
in terms of mg; how much of each medicine should be taken to properly treat bipolar disorder?

A: That would be for a doctor to decide...........

Q: what would happen if somebody takes risperidone without being sick for anything?
hypothetically, if somebody is perfectly alright, had access to risperidone and started taking it; what would happen to him? i would prefer the answer of a professional...

A: Ha. What fool would do that? Risperdal is an antipsychotic. If you are hallucinating or manic, it will calm you down. The only high anyone else is apt to get is tired and groggy and side effects that aren't pleasant. One of the serious ones is prolactima. What's that mean? Your prolactin hormones go on overdrive. What's that do? Your brests produce milk even if you are a guy. Does it go away when you stop the drug? Sometimes, and sometimes you spend the rest of your life on hormones. My pdoc won't prescribe it except as a last resort because she's seen this happen too many times. It's one thing to put up with side effects or chance potential side effects if you are schizophrenic. It's another to be stupid.

Q: does risperidone make it impossible to lose weight?
i've been on it for over 5 weeks now with 0.5mg. i've been working out at the gym for the past month, but i lost nothing or just 1kg. i burned 7-800 calories on average on the cardio everyday and i ate average or a little over average like 1600-2000 calories. im all average sized female. is it because i didn't lift any weights? im planning to stop risperidone for 3 days and see if i can lose even 0.5kg.

A: It is not impossible to lose weight with risperidone, just keep up the cardio and a sensible diet. It would help to add in weight lifting to your workout routine. Do not stop taking risperidone without talking to your doctor.
