Q: zyprexa.....?
i hae bipolar and mania and panic attacks. for this, the last year i have been on lithium and xanax(low dosage) today the phschchiatrist put me on zyprexa which is in the family of respidal which made me go insane. i am so scared to take this cause i dont want the same reaction. what do i do?

A: Dear Gen, I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and have been prescribed antipsychotics such as: Zyprexa, Risperdal, Abilify and Seroquel to treat my anxiety. Yes, all these drugs are in the same family, but just because you experienced serious side effects with one of these drugs doesn't necessarily mean you will experience the same side effects with another antipsychotic. Not everybody experiences the same side effects while taking a particular drug. For example, you had a very bad experience while taking Risperdal, but somebody else who takes it, might not experience any side effects at all. Side effects vary from person to person. Not everybody is the same. Although I am not a doctor, my advice to you would be to speak to your doctor immediately before taking Zyprexa, and tell him or her that you're very concerned about taking this drug because you've had a bad experience while taking Risperdal. Don't be afraid to ask your Psychiatrist any questions that you may have. The more information you tell him or her, the more he or she can help you.

Q: Zyprexa???
I have to start taking it in a couple days and I don't know a thing about it. Please any information is good.

A: Depends what you are taking it for, but I take it for bipolar mania and a tuoch of psychosis from time to time. It may knock you out: I sleep like a baby on it now, but at first I really, really slept. It certainly brought me back to reality fast, like less than a day, and it has made the voices go away and the music stop. It can be a b!tch for weight gain. I have managed to keep my weight stable through diet and exercise, which has had a spin-off benefit of making me very fit. Q: What is the purpose of using Zyprexa Zydis as opposed to regular Zyprexa?
Zyprexa's website doesn't say. I was recently put on Zyprexa Zydis 10mg for acute mania. I fell asleep within an hour and woke up cured of the mania. Zydis is an orally disintegrating tablet for those wondering.

A: Ar is correct and Liz is wrong. Olanzapine causes significant weight gain in most people regardless of how it is taken. Zydis has several advantages. - it works fast (aka sit down and shut up) - it can be taken by someone NPO (no food or drink) - it can be taken with nausea and vomiting - it is a lot harder to "cheek" (hide in the mouth and spit out later, since it disolves), important in teens and some adults

Q: How long does Zyprexa stay in your system? I mean if a doctor does a blood/urine test?
If a doctor does a blood/urine test. Can they find out how long you've been taking Zyprexa and how long its been in your system. If yes, so how many days & weeks does stay in your body? And plus how many days/weeks can a blood/urine test show that drug has been in your system?

A: Why are you wondering about Zyprexa (olanzapine) in a drug test? Zyprexa is not an addictive drug, it does not cause euphoria, it is not a controlled substance. A drug test can test for anything but regular drug tests never test for anything like that. There would need to be a specific reason to test specifically for Zyprexa for a test to even be considered. They don't really use blood tests very often for drugs. Blood tests are very accurate but drugs are not detectable in blood much faster than in urine. But just so you know Zyprexa has a half-life of about 24hrs in a healthy person. Why are you so concerned about getting drug tested for Zyprexa? Are you abusing it? Some people do abuse it and may get some from friends due to the sedating effects it has. And some people think it is addictive and erroneously try to abuse it. But it is an antipsychotic, generally its effects are unpleasant. In fact it blocks the primary neurotransmitter that makes people feel high. So no, they won't test for it.

Q: How long does it take Zyprexa to start working?
My brother was prescribed Zyprexa a few days ago and I'm just wondering if it's supposed to start working immediately, or if it's one of those medications that takes like a month to get in the system. Does anyone know?

A: I worked in an AFC home. Zyprexa is usually used for psycological issues. Lets just say when taking our residents off the drug we 'weened' them off it....Slowly lowering the dose for two weeks before stopping consumption. I also know that when we started giving zyprexa we had to wait two weeks before we saw 'continuous' reults. I'm sure some effects can be seen as early as 24 hours but I would wait a good 2 weeks before you can see the 'real results' of zyprexa.

Q: Does Zyprexa heighten or lower serotonin levels? By the way, what would is serotonin anyway?
I sure hope they aren't going to make me retarded. I used to be very spacey as a child and it wasn't until I finally became normal that they put me on Zyprexa.

A: Zyprexa works to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia by blocking various serotonin and dopamine receptors. It blocks the serotonin (5HT2A) receptor more potently than the dopamine (D2) receptor. In animal studies, Zyprexa is more potent at blocking serotonin and dopamine than Clozaril. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter synthesized in serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) and enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract of animals including humans. Serotonin is also found in many mushrooms and plants, including fruits and vegetables. Hope this info helps you. I think I am pregnant but I´´m not sure. I am taking cymbalta (antidepressant) and Zyprexa (antipsychotic). If I were pregnant I would like to know the effects of these medication on the baby

A: Not good. Anything that releases chemicals that the child would otherwise not be exposed to in the womb can be fatal, if not farmful to the child!

Q: What is the best way to get off Zyprexa?
Been on Zyprexa for one year and gained over 50 pounds. Gone from 5 mg to 2.5 mg. Anyone had any experience getting off the medications and have any suggestions. Also, have read that fish oil, magnesium, and garlic are great supplements for those people dealing with mental disorders. I wonder if these would be of help as well.

A: I'm just starting it. Why would you want to get off it? Ask your doctor for suggestions.

Q: What did zyprexa cause to physically happen?
I took Zyprexa for a while and now I'm having symptoms of CHF. Could zyprexa be a factor?

A: Zyprexa has a side effect of causing the bood sugar to elavate. It also causes many people to gain weight and then they get Diabetes 2.

Q: I have two questions: 1) What is the percentage of people who develop diabetes while taking Zyprexa? 2) Is?
Zyprexa permanently sedating, or does this side effect go away in time?

A: Zyprexa doesn't cause diabetes, but it can cause elevated blood sugars in those with diabetes, so I would imagine that adult onset of diabetes is not uncommon in those taking this medication. As for the side effects, they do lessen with ongoing use.
